Guiding Star

Clear and Shared: The Path to Achieving Your Goals

March 05, 20252 min read

For anyone serious about achieving success, the concept of goal setting is already familiar territory. Goals act as a guiding star, providing focus and allowing you to measure progress along the way. To truly serve these purposes, your goals must be specific, written down, and shared.

The act of writing down your goals significantly boosts your commitment to them. It requires clarity and focus, transforming vague desires into concrete actions. As you write and refine your goals, you're engaging in the vital process of determining what truly ignites your passion and determination. Without putting pen to paper, goals remain ephemeral thoughts and distant dreams. For years, I contemplated running a marathon, but it wasn't until I committed it to paper and shared my intention with others that I found myself training six days a week for a spring race.

Sharing your goals with others is equally powerful. It creates a sense of accountability—much like the “put your money where your mouth is” adage. When you announce your goals, you’re declaring your commitment, motivating yourself to act to avoid losing face. Reflect on the resolve of Tariq ibn Ziyad, who, in 711, famously burned his ships upon landing in Gibraltar. His message was clear: victory was the only path forward. While your goals might not involve conquest, applying the same no-retreat mentality can fortify your commitment to success.

Consider how you can define your goals with such clarity that moving forward becomes the only option. Identify those in your life who can support your journey, providing encouragement, insight, or just the gentle pressure needed to help you stay true to your path.

Invest time in crafting specific, written goals, and contemplate who you can share them with for support and motivation. The clarity and accountability that comes from these practices are crucial elements for realizing the success you envision. By turning your goals into actionable commitments and enlisting the aid of others, you construct a powerful framework for achieving your aspirations and fueling your journey forward.
